I rang in the New Year at 12,000 feet over the city of Toronto. The clock struck midnight as the airplane banked over the city, and right on cue the fireworks started shooting up from all directions. It was spectacular. I took it as an omen that 2018 has some wonderful things in store!
I’ve drafted a few resolutions that will help me move towards my fitness, diet, and weight loss goals. I narrowed the list down to four broad goals that I’d like to share with you. Throughout the year I’ll be posting monthly lists on the blog that break down these overarching goals into tasks that are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Timely (SMART). My resolutions form my dreams and intentions; my monthly lists will outline my action plan.
My Health, Fitness and Wellness Goals for 2018:
- Weight Loss: This year, I will lose 50 pounds. Although I don’t wish to use weight as the most important measure of my health and well-being, I know that lowering my weight will be beneficial for my health in the long run. I chose 50 as an attainable number that is still high enough to require my focus for the full 365 days of the year.
- Healthy Eating: This year, I will improve my skills in the kitchen. I intend to approach each meal and snack as an opportunity to put as much nutrition into my body as possible. So lots of leafy greens, colourful veggies, beans and legumes, and fruit for me this year!
- Fitness: This year, I will teach my first ever fitness class. This is a goal that I’ve wanted to achieve for a while now, so I will make it a reality in 2018. I became a certified Pound instructor in December, and hope to teach my first class this winter. Wish me luck!
- Mindfulness: This year, I will establish a daily meditation practice. I purchased a year’s subscription to the Headspace app at the end of December, and have been using it daily ever since. So far, I love it. I already feel the benefits of taking time to unplug and centre myself, and I look forward to reporting back after a few months to follow up on whether it has helped me better cope with life’s stresses.
And that’s it! I’ll be updating these goals as the months go by, evaluating what’s working and what isn’t working, and adjusting accordingly. I have big plans for 2018, and I intend to lose no time in implementing them.
Wishing you the best of luck in crushing your own goals for 2018 – let’s do this!
